Guest Blog: A day in the life of a Small Business Owner…with Kat Heath, founder of 2.4 Blogzine

Kat is a shining light of openness, honesty and warmth. Her smile makes you feel happier, and her happy laugh is such a pleasure to hear! I met Kat a playgroup initially, before working with her on my group coaching programme and at one of my workshops. Owner of a brilliant blogzine, professional blogger and mum of 2, and co-owner alongside her husband of MiHandyman, a wonderfully useful business, it was a real pleasure to share her day as part of this series.

1. Tell me about your business! What’s your mission?!

I currently run two businesses of sorts, one is @mi-handyman which I own with my husband, who is a fully qualified builder, after working within housing trusts and the commercial sector across London and the south East, he realised there was a big niche in the market for a Handyman across London, Surrey and west Kent. Projects that are too small for an average builder such as snagging lists, repairs, putting together flat pack furniture (by a large Swedish company in nearby Croydon!) To fitting shelving, brickwork repairs. The list is endless. My other sideline is a blogger for Epsom and Ewell Families and I have created my own blog zine which is my brand if you like. I cover lifestyle, women in business, motherhood and celebrating motherhood.

2. Describe a typical work day, warts and all, from waking up to bed time!

My typical day varies so much. I have an eleven month old and a four year old who is in reception so I cram as much as I can in between baby groups and school pick up. After school I stop working until the kids are in bed. On Wednesdays I fully concentrate on both businesses I set up my work station on my kitchen table once I've dropped Elliott off at his Nan's and immerse myself in tasks. I work best with a list and I'm a big advocate of using a planner otherwise things simply don't get done. Coffee is my main fuel!

3. What are the biggest struggles about your average work day?

I find the biggest struggle is the juggle. Mums juggle so much it's an art form which has been passed down from our own mums however I think we discuss it more. My mum juggled being a health visitor and looking after myself and my sister as a single mum so I have a high expectation of myself in regards to achieving goals and multi tasking. However I find if I don't create time for self care I get very ratty which again is a big struggle to fit in at times.

4. What are the biggest joys?

4.The biggest joys are being able to collect my son from school everyday and be there if he is ill. We often sit and read or watch Cbeebies after school and that to me is one of life's biggest joys. I love the flexibility of running your own business and not being answerable to anyone but yourself.
