Drip: a poem

Drip

There was a noise. It wasn’t a thunder. It wasn’t a roar. The noise didn’t blast you out of your seat and send you reeling.

It was a drip. Drip. Drip. Drip. Drip.

All the time.  Drip. “I must reply to that text.”  Drip. “I must put away the washing.” Drip. ”I must get a load on or I’ll be behind.”  Drip.

The outside world was quiet. But the dripping stayed. Drip. Drip.

“Must cook dinner.” Drip. “Must get the present.” Drip. “Must add carrots to list”. Drip. “Must get new shoes for daughter.”

The dripping grew more. Splash.

“Must get new clothes for son.” Splash. “Must book counsellor.” Splash.

Splash. Splash. SPLASH. SPLOSH.

Oh, me! “Exercise.” SPLOSH. “Whiter teeth.” SPLOSH. “Fitter body.” SPLOSH. “More for charity.” SPLOSH.

until the flood came.
